A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Jeff Pastorek received his BFA from Loyola University New Orleans and his law degree from Tulane University. Since 2003, he has worked with gouache and ink on chipboard and, more recently, on BFK paper.
His work has been featured in numerous publications, including Oxford American and I Heart Magazine; hung in numerous galleries, including The Front and the New Orleans Contemporary Art Center; and acquired by museums such as the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
In recent years, he has changed his focus from humorous vignettes to orderly grids of portraiture, depicting heads of humans and animals. The portraits retain the humor of the earlier chipboard work, but restrict the format to be more rigid and technical, to shift focus to the faces and their relationships to one another. The resulting pieces contemplate language, human expressions of emotions and desires, evolutionary intrigue, and the place of humans in the animal world.
